Jonathan Lewis, MD, PhD, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman

Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Lewis is Chief Executive Officer, and Director. He served as Professor of Surgery and Medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He has been actively involved in leading translational and clinical research in cancer, and is globally recognized by patient advocacy groups. He has helped develop several drugs in cancer. He has received numerous honors and awards in medicine and science, including the ASCO Young Investigator Award, the Kristen Carr Fellowship, the Yale University Ohse Award, the Royal College of Surgeons Trubshaw Medal, and the Sarcoma Foundation of America Hope and Vision Award. He serves as a Director on the Board of POPPA (the Police Organization Providing Peer Assistance) of the New York Police Department (NYPD). He also serves on the Medical Advisory Board of the Sarcoma Foundation of America, and the Scientific Advisory Board of the Combat Wound Initiative Program of the Henry Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine. He serves as Chairman of the Board of the Hope Funds for Cancer Research.

Mr. Bagley is President and Chief Operating Officer and a Director and has served in this capacity since July 2004. Additionally, Mr. Bagley has been Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer since March 2005. Mr. Bagley initiated a career in pharmaceuticals in 1968 with Smith Kline and French Laboratories, leaving in 1985 after launching Tagamet® in the U.S. as Vice President for Pharmaceutical Product Management and serving as President in the over-the-counter/consumer group. From 1985-1990, Mr. Bagley served in several capacities at Squibb Corporation including as President of E. R. Squibb & Sons, U.S. in 1988 and 1989. He subsequently worked in the biotechnology industry as Director, Chief Executive Officer and President of ImmuLogic Pharmaceutical Corporation from 1990 to 1994, as Director, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of ProScript, Inc. from 1994 to 1998, as Director, President and Chief Executive Officer of AltaRex Corp. from 1998 to May 2003, and thereafter as a part time consultant and senior advisor.

Dr. Youssoufian joined ZIOPHARM in July 2011 as the Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. He received his B.S. from Boston College and his M.Sc.,M.D.from the University of Massachusetts. After training in Internal Medicine at Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins, he completed fellowships at Johns Hopkins and at Massachusetts General Hospital and was a Visiting Scientist at Whitehead Institute, MIT. He then served on the faculties of Harvard Medical School as Assistant Professor and Baylor College of Medicine as Associate Professor and Division Chief of Medical Genetics. Subsequently, he was appointed Medical Director at Bristol-Myers Squibb. Following that, he became Distinguished Clinical Scientist at Sanofi-aventis, then joined ImClone Systems in April 2005, most recently becoming Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Global Clinical Sciences. He has published over 85 manuscripts and book chapters on human genetics, recombinant DNA technology, drug discovery and clinical research in oncology, and has been the recipient of numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health and private foundations, with honors that include the Hearst Endowment, Leukemia Society Translational Research Award, Burroughs Wellcome Clinical Scientist Award, and election to the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Dr. Thornton attended graduate and medical school where he earned his MD and PhD degrees, Mark Thornton served as a Medical Officer in the U.S. Navy. Upon leaving the Navy, he completed a Clinical Pharmacology Fellowship and received an MPH degree at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. He has spent 20 years in the drug development arena, including six years at the FDA and 14 years in increasing levels of responsibility in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. His professional experience has been evenly split between oncology and infectious disease/vaccine product development, and his most recent position was Chief Medical Officer at Novavax. In addition to his practical experience in drug development and at the FDA, he is a leading advocate for reform in cancer drug policy, and has published Op-Eds five times in the Wall Street Journal on federal policy issues inhibiting innovation in cancer drug development. Most recently he has lead efforts to have specific guidance developed at FDA that would streamline regulatory approvals for drugs for rare cancers. His advocacy work originates from his leadership of the Sarcoma Foundation of America, which he co-founded with his wife Patricia in 2001, and the National Organization Against Rare Cancers, a coalition of over 20 rare cancer organizations.

Caesar J. Belbel joined ZIOPHARM in September 2011 as Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Secretary. He has substantial expertise in the areas of corporate and securities law and has represented numerous public and private companies in a variety of industries, including life sciences, biotechnology, software, internet services and venture capital. He has extensive experience counseling companies on general corporate law matters, complex financing transactions, mergers and acquisitions, securities law, corporate governance, regulatory affairs, licensing, and intellectual property protection and transfer. Prior to joining ZIOPHARM, from 2003 to 2011, he was Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Secretary of Clinical Data, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company which was acquired in April 2011 by Forest Laboratories, Inc. Prior to Clinical Data, he served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Xpedior Incorporated; and as General Counsel and Secretary for Programart Corporation and Astea International, Inc. Mr. Belbel also practiced as a corporate attorney in the emerging companies practice groups of Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault, and McDermott, Will & Emery. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University and a Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School.

Senior Vice President, Regulatory Affairs, Quality, and Clinical Development

Mr. Morgan is Senior Vice President, Regulatory Affairs, Quality, and Clinical Development and has served in that capacity since June 2008. Previously, Mr. Morgan was the Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and Quality, and Contract Counsel since January 2006. During his career he has submitted and maintained multiple IND, NDA and International regulatory filings and has been the team leader for multinational clinical studies. He also filed the first electronic IND application accepted by the FDA in the new international standard Common Technical Document format. Mr. Morgan has held positions in medical research and clinical/regulatory settings with EPIX Pharmaceuticals, DuPont, Genzyme, PAREXEL and Theseus Imaging before joining ZIOPHARM. He is also a member of the Massachusetts Bar.

Mr. Newman is Senior Vice President, Clinical Operations & Manufacturing and has served in that capacity since March 2011. Mr. Newman has worked in both large pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies for 25 years and his varied experience includes clinical development, regulatory, intellectual property portfolio management, sales, marketing, business development, project management and manufacturing. Most recently Mr. Newman worked at an international Contract Manufacturing Organization where he was responsible for commercial operations in the U.S. subsidiary and for new business development worldwide. Mr. Newman rejoins ZIOPHARM having previously served as Senior Vice President, Business Operations from 2004 to 2007.

Mr. Cook is the Senior Vice President, Finance, Administration and IT Systems and has served in this capacity since May 2011. Previously, Mr. Cook was the Vice President of Finance, Human Relations and Administration since April 2010. Mr. Cook has 10 years of experience in financial analysis and wealth management and corporate administration. Prior to joining ZIOPHARM, Mr. Cook was a Private Client Equity Analyst at KLS Professional Advisors Group, LLC in New York, NY. Before joining KLS, Mr. Cook held increasing levels of responsibility at New England Financial and Sanford C. Bernstein and Co., Inc.
